Endgame guide

Honkai: Star Rail Apocalyptic Shadow Guide

Apocalyptic Shadow is the endgame boss race: two bosses, two teams, and the fewer actions you take, the more points you score. Damage alone won’t cut it, since every boss has its own mechanic, and handling it in the wrong order costs you a pile of extra turns. This guide covers unlocking the mode, how scoring works, reading and dealing with boss mechanics, picking buffs, building teams and the mistakes to avoid, for version 4.6.

What Apocalyptic Shadow Is and How to Unlock It

Apocalyptic Shadow is one of the three main endgame modes, alongside Memory of Chaos and Pure Fiction. The bosses here are mirages of ones you’ve already fought, but their moves have been changed or added to, so don’t expect a rerun of the old fight.

  1. Finish Grim Film of FinalityThis mission in the Penacony story is what unlocks the mode.
  2. Talk to ElegyThat opens Difficulty 1. From then on the mode is permanent, and you can play every phase.
  3. Read the boss traits before you go inBefore each fight you can check every boss’s traits, its Weaknesses and the Types it resists. A minute spent here beats finding out mid-fight that you brought the wrong team.
Free Rewards at Difficulty 2Your first Difficulty 2 clear gives Xueyi (a 4-star character), 300 Stellar Jade and 1 Self-Modeling Resin. The first two difficulties don’t have the extra boss traits, so try them right away.

How Scoring Works

Every fight runs on an Action Value timer, and each action by your characters or the enemy lowers it. Your score depends on how much of the timer is left when the boss goes down, and on the boss’s HP. In short, you want both bosses down in as few actions as possible.

  • Faster kills pay more. A boss that falls with plenty of timer left scores high, so quick damage beats safe but slow play.
  • Don’t quit early. The boss’s HP is part of the score too, so your damage should still count for something even if the boss survives.
  • Enemy turns eat the timer too. Every action by the boss and its adds lowers it. Weakness Break inflicts Action Delay on the boss, so your team fits in more actions before its next turn.
  • Both fights matter. Each boss gets its own team, and struggling in either fight makes full stars hard to reach.
Watch the Toughness BarBefore you fire an Ultimate, check the boss’s Toughness. If it’s about to break, holding it until the boss is broken usually pays off far more. The boss mechanics section below explains why.

The 4 Difficulties and How to Pick Buffs

Each phase has 4 difficulties, all with rewards. They share that phase’s bosses, each one is harder than the last, and from Difficulty 3 on the bosses get extra traits.

DifficultyWhat’s differentWhat to do
Difficulty 1Opens after you talk to Elegy. Bosses only have their base traits.Learn the mechanics and test your teams.
Difficulty 2Still no extra traits. The first clear gives Xueyi, 300 Stellar Jade and 1 Self-Modeling Resin.Clear it early for the one-time reward.
Difficulty 3Each boss gains an extra trait. You need geared teams that clear adds fast.
Difficulty 4Each boss gains another extra trait. Full stars here are one of the requirements for Anomaly Arbitration. From the 9th star on, each star pays 80 Stellar Jade instead of 60, so the last few are worth chasing.
Starward ModeSwitch it on and the hardest difficulty becomes a Starward stage: 3 fights, with a separate team for each. The Prismatic Star (full stars) pays an extra 100 Stellar Jade. Without 12 built characters, leave it for later.

Extra Traits You Might See at Difficulty 3 and 4

  • Each enemy on the field besides the boss makes all enemies take less damage, and sometimes deal more. With this one, clearing the adds first is close to a must, since every add left standing makes the boss harder to hurt.
  • In its second phase, one of the boss’s moves enhances all of its summons.
  • Split copies get more HP, and in the second phase they share one HP pool.
  • The boss gets an extra action each turn, or takes even less damage in a certain state.

How to Pick Buffs

Like in Pure Fiction, you pick a buff for your team before the fight. These buffs are called Finality’s Axiom, and each phase offers a few to choose from. Every phase also has its own Ruinous Embers effect, which applies to every fight and changes from phase to phase.

  • Read the Ruinous Embers effect first. See what kind of team it rewards and build to match. A team that fits the effect has a much easier time.
  • Pick the buff that suits each team. In the same phase, a Break team and a CRIT team often want different buffs. Match the buff to how the team deals damage, not to whichever one has the biggest number.

Common Boss Mechanics and How to Handle Them

Bosses change every phase, so instead of specific bosses, here are the kinds of mechanics that come up. Spot which kind you’re facing in the traits and handle it as below. Most bosses here fight in 2 phases of their own, and some repeat a mechanic when they move into the second.

Steadfast Safeguard

The trait to understand first

The boss takes 50% less damage. Once its Weakness is broken, its action is delayed further and it takes 100% more damage. Bring its Toughness down first and save Ultimates for the break.

Weakness Passed to Summons

Adds first, boss second

The boss summons Elite enemies and transfers its Weakness to them. Each one you defeat takes extra Toughness off the boss, and when they’re all down, the Weakness returns. Until then, hitting the boss does little to its Toughness.

Splitting Into Copies

Bring AoE

At the start of the fight and at each phase change, the boss splits into copies. A defeated copy goes into Feigned Death (it can’t be targeted or act). Once all copies are in it, they merge back and the boss loses extra Toughness.

Crowd Control on Your Team

Bring a cleanser

Some bosses put control effects on your characters. A teammate who can cleanse allies gets rid of them, and breaking the boss’s Weakness cancels the effect as well.

Shields and Debuffs Cut Toughness

Shielders earn their slot

On some bosses, creating shields or debuffing the boss also lowers its Toughness, so shielders and debuffers are worth a slot.

Minions That Cut Toughness

Clearing adds hurts the boss

Some bosses bring minions, and each one defeated lowers the boss’s Toughness. Some even wipe out their own minions with a certain move, so take them down before the boss does it for you.

New to Toughness?Nearly every mechanic above revolves around the Toughness bar. If you’re not sure how Weakness Break works, read the Break and Super Break guide first, then come back.

Strongest Characters in Apocalyptic Shadow (Version 4.6)

This section follows the site tier list, updated October 6, 2026, using the ratings for Apocalyptic Shadow specifically.

Stronger Here

SS here, S+ in Memory of Chaos

Trailblazer (Elation), Saber, Archer, Gilgamesh, Rin Tohsaka, Kafka and Ruan Mei. If you already own them, this is the mode to bring them out.

A Step Lower Here

SS in Memory of Chaos, S+ here

Fugue, Aventurine and Huohuo still work well, just outside the top group. Cerydra, Mydei and Boothill drop from S+ in Memory of Chaos to S in this mode.

Xueyi, the Free One

A tier in this mode

Xueyi comes free with your first Difficulty 2 clear, but she only rates A here. Keep her as a backup, and don’t count on her to carry Difficulty 3 or 4.

Tiers Can ChangeThe tier list shifts with each version. Before you pull, check the latest tier list and the Banner History to see which banners are running.

Building Two Teams for Two Bosses

  1. Check Weaknesses and resistancesEach boss has several Weakness Types and often resists a few (some resist none). Pick a main DPS who hits a Weakness so Toughness drops fast, and avoid resisted Types. Having DPS characters of several Types makes it easier to adapt each phase.
  2. Fit the DPS to the bossAdds or copies call for a DPS who hits many targets or takes down Elite enemies in a few hits. Heavy Toughness damage is often valuable too, since a broken boss takes the most damage.
  3. Add supports for the mechanicThe boss traits tell you what to add: a cleanser against crowd control, and a shielder or debuffer when shields and debuffs lower the boss’s Toughness.
  4. Keep a slot for sustainNearly every team below has someone whose job is keeping the whole team alive, and Huohuo and Hyacine are the names that show up most.

Splitting Characters Between TeamsYour two teams need separate characters, so watch for overlap: the Silver Wolf LV.999 and Evanescia teams both want Yao Guang and Pearl, and Mortenax Blade appears in four teams. The Evanescia and Saber teams above also list 4-star stand-ins for their supports. For more budget options, see the F2P 4-star teams guide. Full teams for each character are on the best teams page.

Rewards and Reset Schedule

A new phase starts every 6 weeks, always on a Monday at 04:00 server time (UTC-5 on America, UTC+1 on Europe, UTC+8 on Asia). It brings new bosses, a new Ruinous Embers effect and new buffs, and it resets your progress, so the star rewards are yours to earn again (the Difficulty 2 bonus is one time only).

MilestoneRewards
First clear of Difficulty 2 (one time only)Xueyi, 300 Stellar Jade, 1 Self-Modeling Resin
Clearing each difficultyLost Crystals, Traveler’s Guides, Refined Aether and Credits
Stars 1 to 860 Stellar Jade and 20,000 Credits per star
Stars 9 to 1280 Stellar Jade and 20,000 Credits per star
Stars 7 to 12Jade Feathers as well, 600 in total per phase
Prismatic Star in Starward Mode100 Stellar Jade, 100 Jade Feathers, 20,000 Credits

That adds up to 900 Stellar Jade per phase (800 from 12 stars, 100 from Starward Mode) plus 700 Jade Feathers, which buy Self-Modeling Resin, Relic Remains and more in the Priceless Jewels shop. To spend your Stellar Jade well, see the Stellar Jade and pity guide.

Don’t Skip a PhaseStars only count for the phase you earn them in. Skip a phase and its Stellar Jade is gone, so grab the easy stars before it ends even if full stars are out of reach.

Common Mistakes

  • Firing Ultimates before the break. A boss with Steadfast Safeguard takes 50% less damage and only takes 100% more once broken. Save your big hits for that window.
  • Hitting only the boss. While its Weakness sits on the adds, the boss barely loses Toughness, and a split boss only merges back once every copy is down. Clear the extras first.
  • Leaving adds alive at Difficulty 3 and 4. Some extra traits make the enemy side tougher the more units it has, so lingering adds make the boss harder to kill.
  • Forgetting a cleanser. Against crowd control, a team with no cleanse can lose a whole string of turns. Without one, at least break the boss in time.
  • Stacking every strong character in one team. Both fights count, so a weak second team drags the whole phase down.
  • Quitting when the kill looks out of reach. The boss’s HP counts toward the score, so finish the fight before you retry.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you unlock Apocalyptic Shadow?

Complete Grim Film of Finality, a mission in the Penacony story, then talk to Elegy to open Difficulty 1. After that the mode stays available for good, with a new phase every 6 weeks.

How is Apocalyptic Shadow scored?

Each fight has an Action Value timer that drops every time you or the enemy act. Your score is based on how much of the timer is left when the boss goes down and on the boss’s HP, so faster kills with fewer actions score higher. Because the boss’s HP factors in, it’s worth fighting to the end even when the kill looks out of reach.

How much Stellar Jade does Apocalyptic Shadow give?

Up to 900 Stellar Jade per phase: 800 from the 12 stars (60 each for the first 8, then 80 each from the 9th star on) and 100 for the Prismatic Star in Starward Mode. Your first clear of Difficulty 2 also gives a one-time 300 Stellar Jade.

When does Apocalyptic Shadow reset?

On a Monday at 04:00 server time, and each phase lasts 6 weeks. Server time is UTC-5 on the America server, UTC+1 on Europe and UTC+8 on Asia. A new phase brings new bosses and buffs, and resets your stars so you can earn the rewards again.

Who are the best characters for Apocalyptic Shadow?

On the version 4.6 tier list, the SS group for this mode includes Pearl, Aventurine • Waveflair, Robin • Summeretto, Silver Wolf LV.999, Trailblazer (Elation), Evanescia, Ashveil, Sparxie, Yao Guang and many more. Saber, Archer, Gilgamesh and Kafka rate SS here but only S+ in Memory of Chaos, so this is the mode to use them in.

How many teams do you need for Apocalyptic Shadow?

The regular difficulties need two 4-person teams, one for each boss. Starward Mode needs 3 teams for 3 fights, so if you don’t have 12 built characters yet, focus on full-starring the 4 regular difficulties first.

Is Xueyi from Apocalyptic Shadow any good?

Xueyi is the reward for your first clear of Difficulty 2. She’s rated A in this mode, so treat her as a backup for a newer account rather than someone to carry the hard difficulties.
