“Swords have a temper. Sometimes, you have to touch them to calm them down: put the hilt of the sword in your hand, and it’ll tell you what’s wrong!”

Should You Pull for Yunli?

Main DPS

Yunli is a Physical DPS built around Counters: every time an enemy hits her, she hits right back, and her Ultimate turns her next Counter into a huge attack. The catch is that she is harder to play than she looks, because you have to time her Ultimate well. If you like a counterattack playstyle or your account is missing a Physical DPS, she is worth a look.

She suits players who are happy to watch the turn order and time her Ultimate, and who already own Energy supports like Tingyun or Huohuo. If you mainly want a DPS to carry Pure Fiction or Apocalyptic Shadow, think it over first.

Memory of Chaos Strong Use her Ultimate right before the strongest enemy's turn and Intuit: Cull hits very hard, though how consistent she is depends on whether enemies actually attack her.
Pure Fiction Strong Here you want to pair her with Herta or Jade, two Follow-up ATK characters who work very well next to her.
Apocalyptic Shadow Strong Bosses that attack a lot are a great match for her, but her damage drops hard when enemies don't target her.
Pros & Cons

Pros

  • A very strong all-purpose carry
  • Excellent Energy regeneration, so her Ultimate comes steadily
  • Deals extremely high damage in both single-target and AoE
  • Her counter playstyle means she scales off the enemy's SPD rather than her own
  • Built-in self-sustain and crowd control resistance
  • Her Ultimate has a charge system, so Energy rarely overflows

Cons

  • Can be very awkward to hold because the counter on her Ultimate is use-it-or-lose-it
  • Her consistency depends heavily on aggro increases, either from her signature Light Cone or from Lynx
  • Her damage collapses if enemies do not actively attack Yunli

Best Yunli Build Guide

Best Yunli Build

Yunli is a standard CRIT DPS. Most of her damage comes from Counters during enemy turns rather than from her own turns, so skip SPD and put everything into CRIT Rate and ATK.

Best Light Cones

  • 1 Dance at Sunset Dance at Sunset Best
Her signature, and far ahead of everything else. It greatly raises the chance that enemies target her, which means more Counters and more Energy. On top of that it gives 36% CRIT DMG and a 72% DMG boost to her Counters.
  • 2 Thus Burns the Dawn Thus Burns the Dawn Great
Phainon's signature, but it works really well on Yunli: 687 base ATK, 18% DEF ignore on all her attacks, and a 60% DMG boost after using her Ultimate, which lines up with her enhanced Counter. The downside is that it doesn't raise her chance of being targeted, which gets annoying against enemies that use single-target attacks on someone else.
  • 3 The Unreachable Side The Unreachable Side Great
Gives CRIT Rate and HP, plus a DMG boost when she is attacked or consumes her own HP. Yunli gets hit all the time, so the DMG boost is almost always active. A sensible pick if you don't have her signature.
  • 4 A Trail of Bygone Blood A Trail of Bygone Blood Great
A 4-star that gives CRIT Rate and Follow-up ATK DMG. Her Ultimate's Counters count as both Follow-up ATK and Ultimate DMG, so this bonus applies to them too.
  • 5 Under the Blue Sky Under the Blue Sky Good
A 4-star that raises her ATK and gives extra CRIT Rate when she defeats an enemy.

Best Relics

1
Her strongest set. Yunli uses Follow-up ATKs so often that the 4-piece effect is almost always on, which works out to roughly a 36% DMG boost on her Ultimate. That matters a lot, since her Ultimate is where most of her damage comes from.
2
A set for characters who don't need SPD. Its CRIT Rate makes up for the 8% SPD penalty. Yunli doesn't need SPD and often plays with action advancers like Sparkle, Sunday or Robin, so she barely feels the downside. Without an action advancer, add a little SPD to cover the penalty.
3
Usable, but a bit inconsistent. Her regular Counters only hit each target once, so her stacks go up and down. Her Ultimate slashes hit many times, though, so her biggest hits get close to the full buff.

Best Planar Ornaments

1
The most consistent choice. It gives CRIT Rate and Follow-up ATK DMG, which boosts both her Talent and her Ultimate, with no ramp-up and no conditions.
2
The set with the highest damage potential, since every Follow-up ATK from your team adds CRIT DMG for Yunli. The trade-off is ramp-up time, which depends on how many enemies there are, how long the fight lasts and how many Follow-up ATK users you bring. Depending on those, it can pull well ahead of Inert Salsotto or fall slightly behind, and it fits best on a team with other Follow-up ATK characters.

Main Stats

  • BodyCRIT Rate or CRIT DMG
  • FeetATK%
  • Planar SpherePhysical DMG Boost or ATK%
  • Link RopeATK% or Energy Regeneration Rate

Substats

  • 1CRIT Rate
  • 2ATK% or CRIT DMG
  • 3Effect RES

Go CRIT Rate on Body, because Yunli needs a very high CRIT Rate and her Ultimate already adds CRIT DMG. Use ATK% on Feet, since she doesn't need SPD. On the Planar Sphere, Physical DMG Boost comes first and ATK% also works. ATK% is the standard Link Rope, with Energy Regeneration Rate as the backup option.

CRIT Rate always comes first. Between ATK% and CRIT DMG, keep whichever rolled better. You don't need to stack as much CRIT DMG as other DPS characters do: around 100% CRIT Rate and 100% CRIT DMG on her stat screen plays out closer to 100% and 200% in combat once her Ultimate and Follow-up ATKs come into play.

Stat Targets

  • CRIT Rate90% to 100%
  • CRIT DMG120% or higher
  • ATK3000 or higher, ideally 3200 to 3400
  • HP3400 or higher
  • DEF800 or higher
  • SPD94 (base SPD, no need to build it)

Skill Priority

Ultimate > Talent > Skill = Basic ATK

Her Ultimate is where her enhanced Counter, the Taunt and the extra CRIT DMG come from, so level it first. Her Talent sets the damage of her regular Counters, so raise it alongside. Her Skill heals her and does decent damage, and her Basic ATK matters less, so leave both for last.

Trace Priority

Fiery Wheel > True Sunder > Demon Quell

Fiery Wheel is the most important, so unlock it as early as you can: after she launches Intuit: Slash, her next Intuit: Slash is replaced by Intuit: Cull. True Sunder raises her ATK by 30% for 1 turn every time she Counters. Demon Quell lets her resist Crowd Control debuffs and reduces the DMG she takes by 20% while she is in Parry.

Eidolon Priority

E1 and E2 are clear damage boosts, E6 is a big jump

E1 increases the DMG of Intuit: Slash and Intuit: Cull by 20% and gives Intuit: Cull 3 more hits. E2 lets her Counters ignore 20% of the target's DEF, a big damage increase. E4 gives 50% Effect RES for 1 turn after she launches Intuit: Slash or Intuit: Cull, which is nice but not needed. With E6, if an enemy actively uses an ability while she is in Parry, it triggers Intuit: Cull whether or not it attacks her, and Intuit: Slash and Intuit: Cull gain 15% CRIT Rate and 20% Physical RES PEN when they deal DMG.

Best Yunli Teams

Hypercarry Team

Replace Robin with: Ruan Mei, Sparkle, Pela, Asta Replace Huohuo with: Lynx

Yunli wants Energy so she can use her Ultimate as soon as possible, which is why this team brings both Tingyun and Huohuo to feed her. Huohuo's Ultimate gives Yunli 48 Energy instead of 24, because it is based on her total Energy. Robin buffs ATK, CRIT DMG and DMG and advances the whole team, which is a great fit since Yunli doesn't build SPD.

Dual DPS Follow-up ATK Team

Replace Topaz & Numby with: Herta, Jade Replace Robin with: Ruan Mei, Pela, Asta Replace Huohuo with: Lynx, Aventurine

Yunli also works well next to a second DPS, especially one who uses Follow-up ATKs. Robin buffs both of them well. Herta and Jade fit best in Pure Fiction, and Yunli helps Jade fire her Follow-up ATKs just by attacking enemies. If you use Aventurine, put both Yunli and Aventurine in the middle of the lineup, and don't give him a Light Cone that raises his chance of being targeted.

Budget Team (All 4-Stars)

Replace Trailblazer (Remembrance) with: Pela Replace Tingyun with: Pela

Lynx is Yunli's best 4-star sustain because she raises the chance of Yunli getting hit, which means more Counters. Trailblazer (Remembrance) buffs Yunli's CRIT DMG and Tingyun gives her the extra Energy she needs. If you are missing either support, use Pela instead.

Sunday and Tribbie Team

Sunday gives Yunli extra actions, buffs and Energy. Yunli charges her Ultimate very fast, which feeds Tribbie, and in return Tribbie with her E1 helps Yunli deal more damage to elites and bosses. Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae shields the whole team, and with Sunday on the team he lets the target receive the full 80% DMG boost from Sunday's Skill and keeps refreshing the team's Shields.

Best Teammates for Yunli

Robin
Robin

The best buffer for Follow-up ATK characters: a very high ATK boost, CRIT DMG and DMG boosts. Her extra CRIT DMG for Follow-up ATKs also applies to Yunli's Ultimate, and her team-wide advance makes up for Yunli not building SPD.

Tingyun
Tingyun

Feeds Yunli extra Energy for more Ultimates, plus a DMG boost from her Ultimate and an ATK boost from her Skill. The effect from Tingyun's Skill also triggers on Yunli's Counters and Ultimate.

Huohuo
Huohuo

Her Ultimate gives Yunli 48 Energy, more than a third of an Ultimate. Her ATK buff lasts across Yunli's Counters, and her cleanses make sure those Counters go off.

Sunday
Sunday

Gives Yunli extra actions, strong buffs and Energy, making her better at everything.

Tribbie
Tribbie

Yunli charges her Ultimate quickly, which feeds Tribbie, and in return Tribbie with her E1 helps Yunli hit elites and bosses harder.

Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae
Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae

A go-to sustain for ATK-scaling teams. He shields the whole team and buffs one ally's ATK, and he is an even better fit when Sunday is on the team too.

Lynx
Lynx

Raises the chance of Yunli getting hit, so she gets to fire more Follow-up ATKs. Yunli's best 4-star healer.

Sparkle
Sparkle

Gives Yunli a DMG boost, extra Skill Points and action advance.

Jade
Jade

Yunli helps Jade fire her Follow-up ATKs just by attacking enemies. This pair works best in Pure Fiction.

Aventurine
Aventurine

Provides shields and fires his own Follow-up ATKs. Put both of them in the middle of the lineup and don't give him a Light Cone that raises his chance of being targeted.

How to Play Yunli

Getting Hit Means Energy

Her Talent Flashforge regenerates an extra 15 Energy every time an enemy attacks Yunli, and she immediately Counters the attacker and the targets next to it. Add the Energy from the Counter itself and each hit she takes gives her nearly as much Energy as a Skill, for almost no effort. Her Max Energy is 240 while her Ultimate costs 120, so she can store two uses and rarely wastes Energy.

Use Her Ultimate Right Before an Enemy's Turn

Her Ultimate Earthbind, Etherbreak puts Yunli into Parry and Taunts all enemies until the end of the next turn, whether that turn belongs to an ally or an enemy. If an enemy attacks her during Parry, she launches Intuit: Cull: it hits the target and adjacent targets, then adds 6 more hits on random enemies. If an ally acts next instead, she only launches Intuit: Slash when Parry ends, which skips the 6 extra hits and does far less damage. So use her Ultimate right before the strongest enemy's turn. Keep in mind she can't use her Ultimate again while Parry is active.

Fiery Wheel Saves Your Missed Ultimates

With the Trace Fiery Wheel, each time Yunli launches Intuit: Slash, her next Intuit: Slash is replaced by Intuit: Cull. So even when enemies don't attack her, she still gets her strong Counter, just less often.

Skill or Basic ATK?

Her Skill Bladeborne Quake heals Yunli and hits adjacent targets too, but it doesn't do much more damage than her Basic ATK and it costs a Skill Point. Most of her damage comes from Counters, so you will usually use Basic ATK to get Skill Points back, and save the Skill for when she needs healing or extra Energy. Don't use the Skill just to break Toughness faster: enemies in Weakness Break can't attack her, and Yunli lives on getting hit.

Playstyle overview

Yunli is a damage dealer who automatically launches a Blast counterattack when she is attacked. On top of that, after Yunli uses her Ultimate, she can deliberately enter the Parry state and taunt the enemies. During that time, if she is attacked or when Parry ends, Yunli immediately unleashes a powerful counterattack on the enemies.

Yunli FAQ

Is Yunli worth pulling?
If you like a counterattack playstyle or need a Physical DPS, she is worth considering. Just know that you have to time her Ultimate carefully, and enemies have to actively attack for her to reach her full damage.
Why does Yunli's Ultimate sometimes hit so weakly?
Because the next turn after you used it belonged to an ally, not an enemy. In that case Yunli only launches Intuit: Slash instead of Intuit: Cull. Use it right before an enemy's turn so the Taunt forces them to attack her.
What Light Cone should Yunli use without her signature?
Thus Burns the Dawn and The Unreachable Side are the two good 5-star replacements. For a 4-star, use A Trail of Bygone Blood or Under the Blue Sky.
Does Yunli need SPD?
No. Her damage comes from Counters during enemy turns, so her base SPD of 94 is fine. The only exception is Poet of Mourning Collapse without an action advancer, where a little SPD helps.
Which Eidolon should you stop at?
E1 and E2 both raise her damage clearly, with E2 letting her Counters ignore 20% of the target's DEF. E6 is a huge damage jump, because while she is in Parry, any enemy that actively uses an ability triggers Intuit: Cull, even if it doesn't attack her.
