Should You Pull for Ruan Mei?

Support

Ruan Mei buffs almost everything for the whole team: DMG, SPD, Weakness Break Efficiency and All-Type RES PEN. She also keeps enemies Weakness Broken for longer and deals extra Break DMG on her own. She is a core member of Super Break teams, but her buffs are broad enough to bring into lots of other teams too, so she is very much worth pulling.

She suits you best if you play Firefly, Boothill or Rappa, because Ruan Mei gives them exactly what they need. If you don't play Break teams, she still works well, she just isn't the number one pick in those teams anymore.

Memory of Chaos Very strong Her team-wide buffs work in many kinds of teams, and Thanatoplum Rebloom keeps enemies Weakness Broken for longer, so they act later.
Pure Fiction Outstanding Her buffs cover the whole team, so she fits easily into whatever team you bring here.
Apocalyptic Shadow Outstanding The 50% Weakness Break Efficiency from her Skill lets the whole team break enemy Toughness faster and Break them again more often.
Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Brought Weakness Break Efficiency to the game for the first time
  • A rare RES PEN buff for the whole team
  • A permanent SPD buff for the whole team
  • Buffs that work in any team
  • A core member of Super Break teams
  • Still very good in other team types, even if she is no longer the number one pick there
  • Good defensive support thanks to her break boost

Cons

  • Requires extremely heavy investment to reach her full power
  • Her break damage can steal kills, which is not great for characters who need to land the finishing blow themselves

Best Ruan Mei Build Guide

Best Ruan Mei Build

Ruan Mei's kit scales on Break Effect, but she also needs her Ultimate back quickly and needs to move early so her buffs stay up. That's why she runs an Energy Regeneration Rate Rope and SPD Boots, while her substats go into Break Effect until 180% and SPD until your breakpoint.

Best Light Cones

  • 1 Past Self in Mirror Past Self in Mirror Best
Her best pick. It gives Ruan Mei a big chunk of Break Effect, restores Energy to the whole team at the start of each wave, and restores a Skill Point every time she uses her Ultimate. The DMG boost on Ultimate does very little in Break teams, but it is decent in other teams.
  • 2 In Pursuit of the Wind In Pursuit of the Wind Great
A 4-star that fits Break teams very well: it boosts Break DMG for the whole team, and that also counts for Super Break DMG. Only one character in the team should equip it, since the effect does not stack.
  • 3 Memories of the Past Memories of the Past Great
Gives plenty of Break Effect to help reach the target, and restores Energy every time Ruan Mei attacks. At high Superimposition it lets her use her Ultimate reliably every 3 turns.
  • 4 Meshing Cogs Meshing Cogs Good
A 3-star that does one job: it restores Energy when she attacks or gets hit, so her Ultimate comes back faster. In exchange, it has no other support effect and weaker base stats.
  • 5 Dance! Dance! Dance! Dance! Dance! Dance! Good
A 4-star that advances the whole team's action when Ruan Mei uses her Ultimate, which can give your allies extra turns. It's strongest when she can use her Ultimate often.

Best Relics

1
Her best set. It gives a lot of Break Effect to both Ruan Mei and her teammates, and makes it much easier for her to reach 180% on her own. Put this set on whoever uses their Ultimate most often in the team so the buff stays up.
2
A solid alternative. It gives a good amount of Break Effect and extra Energy every time Ruan Mei breaks an enemy's Weakness.
3
Also a good choice, about as good as Thief of Shooting Meteor. It works best once Ruan Mei already has 180% Break Effect from her Light Cone and substats. Time her Ultimate carefully so the set's SPD buff covers your key characters.

Best Planar Ornaments

1
Her top pick. It gives Energy Regeneration Rate so her Ultimate stays up, and helps Ruan Mei act first in the team to get her buffs out early.
2
Good when Ruan Mei already has a lot of SPD and plays in a CRIT-based team, since this set raises the whole team's CRIT DMG. It needs at least 30% Effect RES to activate.
3
Gives extra Break Effect, which helps if you're still short of 180%. The set needs 145 SPD to activate, and you can reach that from substats and Traces. Once you have 180%, other sets are usually better.

Main Stats

  • BodyHP% or DEF%
  • FeetSPD
  • Planar SphereHP% or DEF%
  • Link RopeEnergy Regeneration Rate or Break Effect

Substats

  • 1Break Effect (until 180%)
  • 2SPD (at least 134)
  • 3HP%
  • 4DEF%
  • 5Effect RES (only with Broken Keel, up to 30%)

For Body and Planar Sphere, HP% comes first, but DEF% is fine too. Both help Ruan Mei take hits in harder content. On the Rope, go for Energy Regeneration Rate over Break Effect, because she needs her Ultimate back quickly. You can make up the Break Effect from substats, Traces and relic sets.

Once you have 180% Break Effect and your SPD breakpoint, it's up to you: add more Break Effect so Ruan Mei deals more damage, or add SPD, HP% and DEF% to make her tougher.

Stat Targets

  • Break Effect180% in combat (160% on the stat screen, the other 20% comes from her Trace)
  • SPD134 or more
  • Energy Regeneration Rate119.44% or more
  • HP3800 or more
  • DEF1000 or more

Skill Priority

Skill = Ultimate = Talent > Basic ATK

Her Skill raises the DMG buff for the whole team, her Ultimate raises the All-Type RES PEN and Thanatoplum Rebloom's damage, and her Talent raises the SPD buff and Ruan Mei's Ice Break DMG. If you have to choose, the Talent can come slightly after the Skill and Ultimate. Leave Basic ATK for last, since most of her damage comes from Weakness Break.

Trace Priority

Candle Lights on Still Waters > Inert Respiration > Days Wane, Thoughts Wax

Candle Lights on Still Waters is the most valuable one: for every 10% of Break Effect above 120%, her Skill increases allies' DMG by another 6%, up to 36%. Inert Respiration gives the whole team 20% Break Effect, and Days Wane, Thoughts Wax regenerates 5 Energy at the start of her turn.

Eidolon Priority

E1 is the most sensible stopping point

E1 makes the whole team ignore 20% of the enemy's DEF while her Ultimate's field is up. E2 gives allies 40% ATK when hitting Weakness Broken enemies, but if you only use Ruan Mei in Super Break teams, that ATK does nothing. E4 gives Ruan Mei 100% Break Effect for 3 turns when an enemy's Weakness is Broken, so you don't need to stack as much Break Effect on her. E6 extends the field by 1 turn and raises her Talent's Break DMG multiplier by another 200%.

Best Ruan Mei Teams

Best Break Team

Replace Firefly with: Boothill, Rappa Replace Fugue with: Trailblazer (Harmony) Replace Lingsha with: The Dahlia, Gallagher, Huohuo

Firefly and Fugue both scale on Break Effect, so they get the full value of Ruan Mei's buffs. Ruan Mei gets enemies Weakness Broken faster and then keeps them Broken for longer, which gives Firefly more chances to deal Super Break DMG. Against lots of Elite enemies, Boothill is the better fit, and against more than three enemies, Rappa is.

Budget Team (All 4-Stars)

Ruan Mei raises the whole team's DMG and Weakness Break Efficiency. March 7th (The Hunt) gets full use of Ruan Mei's All-Type RES PEN and Break Effect, while Trailblazer (Harmony) unlocks Super Break DMG. Gallagher's healing scales on Break Effect, so Ruan Mei's buff also makes him heal more.

DoT Team

Replace Hysilens with: Black Swan, Sampo, Luka, Guinaifen Replace Huohuo with: Gallagher, Luocha, Gepard

Thanatoplum Rebloom keeps enemies Weakness Broken for longer, so they take more DoT ticks before they recover and get to attack. Weakness Break also applies its own DoT effects, and the Break Efficiency buff helps your team trigger them faster. Sampo, Luka and Guinaifen all break Weakness a lot sooner with this buff.

Generalist Team for Other DPS

Replace Castorice with: Dan Heng • Imbibitor Lunae, Seele, Xueyi, Sushang Replace Trailblazer (Remembrance) with: Pela Replace Gallagher with: Gepard, Fu Xuan

Ruan Mei is great with DPS characters who deal a lot of Toughness damage, because her Break Efficiency buff lets them break Weakness even faster. For the remaining support slot, add another buffer for more damage, or use Gepard or Fu Xuan to keep the team safer in harder content.

Best Teammates for Ruan Mei

Firefly
Firefly

Ruan Mei gives Firefly everything she needs: Break Efficiency, SPD and longer Weakness Break on enemies. Firefly also scales on Break Effect, so Ruan Mei's buffs help her even more.

Trailblazer (Harmony)
Trailblazer (Harmony)

A second Break-focused support who makes use of almost all of Ruan Mei's buffs except the DMG boost. Thanks to the Trailblazer's Super Break DMG, Ruan Mei herself gets to deal damage too.

Fugue
Fugue

Together with Ruan Mei, she forms the core support pair of Break teams, and she also benefits from Ruan Mei's Break Effect buff.

Boothill
Boothill

Needs exactly what Ruan Mei offers: Break Efficiency, SPD and longer Weakness Break. A better fit than Firefly against lots of Elite enemies.

Rappa
Rappa

Also gets the full value of Ruan Mei's Break buffs, and is stronger than Firefly when you face more than three enemies.

Himeko
Himeko

As the Super Break DPS in place of Firefly, Himeko shines the most. A good pick if you don't have Firefly and need to handle Fire-weak content.

The Dahlia
The Dahlia

Lets the team deal Break DMG even when enemies aren't Weakness Broken, and often teams up with Firefly and Ruan Mei.

Gallagher
Gallagher

His healing scales on Break Effect, so Ruan Mei's buff goes straight into his healing. His Ultimate also inflicts Besotted, which makes enemies take more Break DMG.

Kafka
Kafka

Ruan Mei keeps enemies Weakness Broken for longer, so they take more DoT before they get to act, which suits Kafka's teams very well.

Pela
Pela

Pela lowers enemy DEF while Ruan Mei adds All-Type RES PEN, so the two complement each other very well.

How to Play Ruan Mei

Skill: Keep Overtone Up

After using her Skill, Ruan Mei gains Overtone for 3 turns. While she has Overtone, the whole team deals more DMG and gets 50% Weakness Break Efficiency, which means their hits take down Toughness faster. Since the buff lasts 3 turns, you have plenty of time to get your Skill Points back. With 180% Break Effect, her Candle Lights on Still Waters Trace adds up to 36% more DMG to this buff.

Ultimate: RES PEN and Thanatoplum Rebloom

Her Ultimate deploys a field for 2 turns. While it is up, the whole team gets All-Type RES PEN, a very rare kind of buff. Allies' attacks inside the field apply Thanatoplum Rebloom to the enemies they hit. When an enemy tries to recover from Weakness Break, it triggers, extending their Weakness Break, delaying their action by 20% of Ruan Mei's Break Effect plus 10%, and dealing extra Ice Break DMG. An enemy can only get Thanatoplum Rebloom again after fully recovering from Weakness Break.

Why Breaking Faster Pays Off

Enemies that aren't Weakness Broken take slightly less damage, and that reduction goes away once they are Broken. Normally that window is fairly short. With Ruan Mei, your team breaks Toughness faster thanks to Overtone, then keeps enemies Broken longer thanks to Thanatoplum Rebloom, so you get more chances to land big hits right when enemies are at their weakest.

Talent: SPD Buff and Bonus Damage

Just by being on the field, Ruan Mei permanently raises the SPD of all her teammates (not herself). Whenever an ally breaks an enemy's Weakness, she deals extra Ice Break DMG to that enemy, even though she wasn't the one who broke it. This is not a Follow-up ATK, it lands together with the ally's Break DMG, so Ruan Mei's Break Effect doesn't go to waste even when she doesn't do the breaking herself.

Ruan Mei FAQ

Is Ruan Mei worth pulling?
Yes. Ruan Mei is an excellent support who buffs the whole team's DMG, SPD, Weakness Break Efficiency and RES PEN. She is a core member of Super Break teams and still works well in many other kinds of teams.
How much Break Effect does Ruan Mei need?
She needs 180% in total in combat to max out her buff. Inert Respiration already gives 20%, so you only need 160% on the stat screen outside of combat.
Why use an Energy Regeneration Rate Rope instead of Break Effect?
Because Ruan Mei needs her Ultimate back quickly to keep the RES PEN up. You can get Break Effect from substats, Traces and relic sets instead.
Which Eidolon should I stop at?
E1 is a sensible place to stop: the whole team ignores 20% of the enemy's DEF while her Ultimate's field is up. E2 only adds ATK, so it does nothing if you only play Ruan Mei in Super Break teams.
What Light Cone should I use without Past Self in Mirror?
In Pursuit of the Wind and Memories of the Past are two great 4-star options. Dance! Dance! Dance! also works if you want to advance the whole team's action.
