She watched the figure of the little girl dart away like a rabbit under the hazy moon. She followed the girl's footsteps and scent as though chasing prey. In the end, she waited for the girl at the end of the road.
Or perhaps the girl was waiting for her to come.
Under the shining moonlight, the general saw that face clearly.
“Do you want to join the Cloud Knights?”
“I don't want to sell my life for a wolf-headed boss.”
The girl spoke Borisin with difficulty and in broken pieces. That expression upon her face, the general had seen it countless times while rescuing her own kin in the occupied territories.
Although these people shared the same blood as her, they spoke different languages and held different thoughts.
They had never regarded themselves as descendants of the fox tribe, but then, who were they?
The general trembled slightly and stepped aside to clear the way.
“Go, from today on they will chase you no longer...”
“But I want them dead.”
The general stared at the little girl in disbelief, astonished as though she had seen a meteor streak across the sky, and that small beast-like figure suddenly melted into the darkness.
The general closed her eyes, as if the moonlight were burning them. After a while she lowered her head and saw the girl's bare feet covered with thorn scars and smeared with mud.
“Why aren't you wearing shoes?”
“I forgot to bring them, I didn't notice.”
The general took off her own war boots, compared the size, and put them on the girl.
“They fit rather well... Then let us set out.”
“And what about you?”
“I got used to walking on thorns long ago.”
She strode off, her bare feet as if flying, and the little girl kept close behind her the whole way.
Or perhaps it was that the two of them were chasing one another.
