Pitch-Dark Hook the Great

“Who am I? Heh, I’m the boss around here, you can call me… Pitch-Dark Hook the Great!”

Should You Pull for Hook?

Main DPS

Hook is a 4-star Fire DPS who is very simple to play: her Skill inflicts Burn, then every hit on a Burned target lets her Talent add extra damage and Energy. She mostly hits one target at a time and only spreads damage with the Enhanced Skill she gets after her Ultimate. She is usable, but her kit has nothing left to optimize, and plenty of other characters do the job better.

A good fit for new players who need a Fire DPS that can take down both Elite enemies and regular mobs. If you already have Hook, even at E6, and you are short on Fire characters, level her up and use her until you get someone better.

Memory of Chaos Decent Almost all of her damage goes into one target, and she only hits adjacent enemies with her Enhanced Skill, so she has a hard time keeping up with other damage dealers.
Pure Fiction Decent She has very little AoE, so Hook runs out of steam against big groups of enemies that keep calling in more.
Apocalyptic Shadow Decent She does fairly well against a Fire-weak boss, but plenty of other characters do it better.
Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Decent single-target damage
  • Generates plenty of Energy from her own kit
  • Faster than you think thanks to the action advance from her A6 trace
  • High single-target Toughness damage

Cons

  • She does not really play like a Destruction character, more like a Hunt character with occasional AoE
  • Relies on Burn being applied to reach her full power
  • There is nothing left to optimize beyond the power she already has
  • Plenty of better all-rounders exist now

Best Hook Build Guide

Best Hook Build

Build Hook like a regular CRIT damage dealer: CRIT Rate, CRIT DMG and ATK. Her Burn also scales off ATK, so don't let that stat fall behind.

Best Light Cones

  • 1 On the Fall of an Aeon On the Fall of an Aeon Best
Her best Light Cone. It raises her ATK and adds a DMG boost whenever she inflicts Weakness Break on an enemy.
  • 2 Something Irreplaceable Something Irreplaceable Great
The other 5-star option. It raises her ATK and boosts her DMG when Hook defeats an enemy or gets hit, with a small heal on top.
  • 3 Woof! Walk Time! Woof! Walk Time! Great
A 4-star Light Cone that works with her kit. It raises her ATK and increases the DMG she deals to Burned enemies, and Hook keeps enemies Burned for the whole fight. Even better if you can get it to S5.
  • 4 A Secret Vow A Secret Vow Good
Another 4-star worth using if you can get it to S5. It ranks a step below Woof! Walk Time! for Hook.
  • 5 The Moles Welcome You The Moles Welcome You Good
Simply raises her ATK, which nudges up her overall damage. Usable until you have one of the Light Cones above.

Best Relics

1
Her best set. Hook applies Burn herself, so her attacks on Burned enemies get much stronger. To get the full effect, the enemy needs to have 3 debuffs on them.
2
The second choice. It gives CRIT Rate and boosts Skill and Ultimate DMG, which are exactly Hook's two main damage sources.
3
If you don't have 4 good pieces of one set yet, mix these two 2-piece bonuses. Together they add Fire DMG Boost and DMG from all sources.

Best Planar Ornaments

1
Boosts Skill DMG, and her Skill is where most of Hook's damage comes from. The catch is that Hook needs 70% CRIT Rate to activate the effect.
2
About as good as Rutilant Arena. It increases all of Hook's damage, and just reaching the 135 SPD breakpoint makes her noticeably stronger.
3
The third choice, also a damage boost. It only needs 120 SPD to activate, which is easy to reach.

Main Stats

  • BodyCRIT Rate or CRIT DMG
  • FeetSPD or ATK%
  • Planar SphereFire DMG Boost or ATK%
  • Link RopeATK%

Substats

  • 1CRIT Rate
  • 2CRIT DMG
  • 3SPD (up to your chosen breakpoint)
  • 4ATK%

SPD or ATK% Feet both work, and SPD lets Hook take more actions in each cycle. Go for Fire DMG Boost on the Planar Sphere, with ATK% as a stand-in until you get a good one. Use ATK% on the Link Rope.

CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG matter equally. Try to keep 2% CRIT DMG for every 1% CRIT Rate. SPD only needs to reach the breakpoint you are aiming for, then put everything else into CRIT.

Stat Targets

  • CRIT Rate60% to 70% or more (70% if you use Rutilant Arena)
  • CRIT DMG120% to 140% or more
  • ATK2300 to 2700 or more, or 2400 to 2800 or more
  • SPD134 (recommended) or 143, base SPD is fine if Sparkle or Bronya advances her turns

Skill Priority

Skill > Ultimate, Talent > Basic ATK

Her Skill is her main source of single-target damage, so level it first. Ultimate and Talent come next, and her Talent makes Hook hit harder against Burned enemies. Basic ATK is only there to recover Skill Points, so level it last.

Trace Priority

Playing With Fire > Innocence > Naivete

Playing With Fire matters most: after using her Ultimate, Hook has her action Advanced Forward by 20% and regenerates 5 extra Energy, so she acts more often and gets her Ultimate back sooner. Innocence restores 5% of her Max HP every time her Talent triggers, which helps her keep her own HP up. Naivete raises her chance to resist Crowd Control debuffs by 35%, nice to have.

Eidolon Priority

E1, E4 and E6 are the clearest power spikes

E1 makes her Enhanced Skill deal 20% more DMG, and that is Hook's main damage source. E2 extends the Burn from her Skill by 1 turn, so Burn stays on more reliably. E4 gives her Talent a 100% base chance to Burn enemies adjacent to the target, handy against groups. E6 makes her deal 20% more DMG to Burned enemies.

Best Hook Teams

Budget Team (All 4-Stars)

Everyone here is a 4-star, so it is easy to put together as a new player. Asta raises Hook's SPD and Fire DMG, Yukong boosts her CRIT stats, and Natasha keeps the whole team healed.

Generalist Team

Replace Aventurine with: Fu Xuan, Huohuo

Sparkle's Skill buffs Hook's damage, and Tingyun helps her get her Ultimate quickly so she can keep using her Enhanced Skill. Bronya or Asta can replace one of the Supports: Bronya gives DMG buffs and extra turns, while Asta raises Hook's Fire DMG and SPD. Fu Xuan increases the team's CRIT Rate and reduces the DMG allies take, and Huohuo gives AoE healing and restores Energy to the whole team. If you need more survivability, Trailblazer (Preservation) can take a Support slot at the cost of some damage.

Burn Team

Replace Guinaifen with: Kafka, Sampo Replace Ruan Mei with: Pela, Asta

Hook and Guinaifen keep Burn on enemies nonstop, and Ruan Mei raises the team's Break Efficiency. Kafka can trigger the Burns Hook applies outside of Hook's turn, and Sampo boosts DoT DMG with his Ultimate. Pela lowers the DEF of all enemies, so Burn hurts more too. Only bring Asta when every enemy is weak to Fire, since the team would then have 3 Fire characters.

Best Teammates for Hook

Tingyun
Tingyun

Hook's main damage comes from getting her Ultimate fast enough to use her Enhanced Skill, and that is exactly what Tingyun helps with.

Huohuo
Huohuo

AoE healing plus Energy for the whole team, so Hook can use her Ultimate more often.

Asta
Asta

A 4-star who raises Hook's SPD and Fire DMG, a good fit for budget teams.

Yukong
Yukong

A 4-star who boosts Hook's CRIT stats in budget teams.

Sparkle
Sparkle

Her Skill buffs Hook's damage. With Sparkle advancing her turns, Hook doesn't need much SPD.

Bronya
Bronya

Gives Hook DMG buffs and extra turns.

Fu Xuan
Fu Xuan

Raises the whole team's CRIT Rate and reduces the DMG allies take.

Guinaifen
Guinaifen

Keeps Burn on enemies alongside Hook in the Burn team.

Ruan Mei
Ruan Mei

Raises the Break Efficiency of the whole Burn team.

Kafka
Kafka

Can trigger the Burns Hook applies outside of Hook's turn, a good replacement for the damage dealer slot in the Burn team.

How to Play Hook

Burn First, Hit After

Her Skill, Hey! Remember Hook?, deals Fire DMG to one enemy and inflicts Burn for 2 turns. After that, every time Hook attacks a Burned target, her Talent, Ha! Oil to the Flames!, adds an extra hit of Fire Additional DMG and regenerates 5 extra Energy. So as long as you keep enemies Burned, Hook hits harder and gets her Ultimate back sooner.

Her Ultimate Unlocks a Spreading Skill

Her Ultimate, Boom! Here Comes the Fire!, deals massive Fire DMG to one enemy and Enhances her next Skill so it hits both the main target and adjacent enemies. This is Hook's only AoE attack, and hitting several Burned enemies also triggers her Talent. With her Trace Innocence, Hook also restores 5% of her Max HP each time her Talent triggers.

Her Ultimate Comes Back Faster Than You Think

Hook's Ultimate costs 120 Energy. That sounds like a lot, but her Talent gives extra Energy every time she hits a Burned enemy, and her Trace Playing With Fire Advances her action Forward by 20% and regenerates 5 extra Energy after she uses her Ultimate. Add Tingyun or Huohuo and Hook uses her Ultimate very often.

Use Her Technique to Burn the Whole Field

Her Technique, Ack! Look at This Mess!, attacks the enemy immediately. Upon entering battle, Hook deals Fire DMG to a random enemy and has a 100% base chance to inflict Burn on every enemy for 3 turns. That way her Talent already has targets to trigger on from the very first turn.

Quick Tips

  • You usually won't build Effect Hit Rate on Hook on purpose, so E2 extending her Burn by 1 turn makes her more consistent.
  • If you use Rutilant Arena, keep her CRIT Rate at 70% or more, or the effect turns off.
  • Basic ATK is only for recovering Skill Points, so level it last.
  • In the Burn team, only add Asta when every enemy is weak to Fire, since the team would then have 3 Fire characters.
  • A Fire-weak boss that doesn't keep summoning reinforcements is where Hook shines the most.

Hook FAQ

Is Hook worth using?
For new players, yes. Hook is an easy 4-star Fire DPS who can take down both Elite enemies and regular mobs. In the long run there are many better damage dealers, but if you are short on Fire characters, use her until you have someone to replace her.
What Light Cone should Hook use without On the Fall of an Aeon?
Something Irreplaceable and Woof! Walk Time! are both good picks, and Woof! Walk Time! is a 4-star that also boosts DMG against Burned enemies, which suits Hook well. A Secret Vow, The Moles Welcome You and Under the Blue Sky are usable too. If you have nothing else, the 3-star Collapsing Sky works as a stopgap, since it boosts her Basic ATK and Skill DMG.
How much SPD does Hook need?
134 is the breakpoint to aim for, or 143 if you want more. If Sparkle or Bronya advances her turns, base SPD is fine.
Which Eidolon should I aim for on Hook?
E1, E4 and E6 give the clearest power spikes: E1 boosts her Enhanced Skill DMG, E4 spreads Burn to adjacent enemies, and E6 makes her deal 20% more DMG to Burned enemies. E2 keeps Burn on for 1 extra turn.
Can Hook deal AoE damage?
Very little. Only the Enhanced Skill she gets after her Ultimate hits adjacent enemies. The rest of the time she fights almost entirely single-target, more like a character of The Hunt.
