Weakness Break and Super Break in Honkai: Star Rail

That white bar above an enemy’s HP isn’t there for decoration. This guide explains Weakness, Toughness, Weakness Break, Break Effect and Super Break in plain words, with the Break effect of each Type and a few sample teams, so you know when a Break team is worth building.

What Weakness and Toughness Are

Combat in Honkai: Star Rail is turn-based, and SPD decides who acts first. Every enemy is weak to a few Types, and that’s its Weakness. Above its HP bar sits a white gauge called Toughness. Think of it as a shield: hit the enemy with a character whose Type matches its Weakness and that shield drains fast.

When Toughness reaches 0, the enemy suffers a Weakness Break. From then on it’s much easier to hurt, its turn gets pushed back, and sometimes the attack it was lining up gets canceled. The whole Break playstyle comes down to one idea: empty that white bar quickly, then pile on damage while the enemy is broken.

Weakness

The Types an enemy fears

Each enemy is weak to a few Types. Bring characters of those Types and you drain Toughness far faster than by hitting it with whoever you have.

Toughness

The white bar above HP

The shield you have to empty before the enemy can be broken.

Weakness Break

When Toughness hits 0

The enemy takes Break DMG, gets its action delayed and suffers an extra effect based on the Type of the character who broke it.

Pick the Type first, then the characterIn a Break team, bringing the wrong Type against a boss throws away most of your edge, because if you can’t break its Toughness your damage drops hard. So before any tough fight, the first thing to check is what the enemy is weak to.

Weakness Break Effects for Each Type

The moment Toughness hits 0, the enemy takes Break DMG, its action is delayed, and it gets an extra effect that depends on the Type of the character who broke it. Some Types deal damage over time, others mess with the enemy’s turn:

TypeBreak effectWhat it does
PhysicalBleedDeals Physical damage over time (DoT)
FireBurnDeals Fire damage over time (DoT)
IceFreezeFreezes the enemy in place so it can’t act, plus extra Ice DMG
LightningShockDeals Lightning damage over time (DoT)
WindWind ShearDeals Wind damage over time (DoT)
ImaginaryImprisonmentSlows the enemy down and pushes its turn back
QuantumEntanglementPushes the enemy’s action back, then deals extra Quantum DMG when its next turn starts. The more the enemy gets hit before then, the bigger that damage

Break Effect makes all of these stronger: bigger DoT from the break, longer slows, and enemy turns pushed back further. So the same break hurts a lot more coming from a character with high Break Effect than from one without it.

Use breaks to protect your teamImaginary and Quantum are good at pushing enemy turns back, and Ice stops the enemy from acting at all. If a boss is about to fire off a nasty attack, breaking it at the right moment to delay its turn is a cheap way to keep your team safe, and sometimes it cancels that attack entirely.

What Break Effect Does and Doesn’t Boost

Break Effect is the stat for everything tied to Weakness Break. A lot of newer players assume it helps you break Toughness faster. It doesn’t. Here’s an easy way to keep it straight:

Boosts

What the stat makes bigger

The Break DMG dealt the moment Toughness breaks, the DoT that comes from a break (Bleed, Burn, Shock, Wind Shear), how much the enemy gets slowed and delayed, and Super Break DMG.

Doesn’t boost

Don’t mix these up

How fast you deplete Toughness. Piling Break Effect onto a character doesn’t change how quickly they empty the Toughness bar. DoT from a character’s own kit doesn’t get boosted either, only the DoT caused by the break itself.

Doesn’t need

A big plus

CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG. Break characters don’t rely on CRIT for their damage, so you don’t have to balance those two stats. For the damage side, you can focus on Break Effect.

So what decides how fast you break Toughness? The character’s kit. Players call how well a Skill, Talent or Ultimate chips through Toughness its Break Efficiency, and attacks with lots of hits often break Toughness more easily. That’s why picking the right breaker matters just as much as building the right stats.

Don’t build it by mistakeStacking Break Effect on a character with no Break mechanics only makes their Break DMG bigger. It doesn’t help them break Toughness any faster. Before you gear someone, check which stats they actually want on their character page or in the Relics and stats guide.

What Super Break Is and How It Differs From Break DMG

Normally, Break DMG only goes off at the moment the enemy becomes Weakness Broken. Any hits after that are just regular damage. Super Break changes that: when your team has a Super Break effect, attacks against an enemy that is already Weakness Broken deal extra Super Break DMG.

Two things to remember. First, Super Break DMG scales with Break Effect. Second, the more Toughness damage an attack would deal, the bigger its Super Break DMG, even though the Toughness bar is already empty at that point. An enemy that still has Toughness normally takes no Super Break DMG, so the break has to come first.

  1. Break the ToughnessUse characters that match the enemy’s Weakness to bring Toughness down to 0. The enemy takes Break DMG and suffers its Type’s Break effect.
  2. Turn on Super BreakSomeone has to enable it for the team. An easy example is the Ultimate of Trailblazer (Harmony), which lets the whole team deal Super Break DMG. In Firefly teams, Fugue is another pick for dishing out Super Break DMG.
  3. Unload while the enemy is brokenWhile the enemy stays Weakness Broken, every attack with high Toughness damage turns into a lot of Super Break DMG. This is when your whole team should throw out its strongest moves.

That’s also why Asta fits free-to-play Super Break teams so well. She buffs her teammates and deals a lot of Toughness damage at the same time, and more Toughness damage means bigger Super Break DMG.

Super Break isn’t the only way to keep dealing Break DMG after the break. Firefly and Boothill each have their own way of doing it when they hit a Weakness Broken enemy. That’s why these two usually sit at the center of Break teams.

Tips to Break Toughness Faster

Knowing the mechanics is one thing, using them in a fight is another. These habits make life a lot easier for Break teams, and for regular teams too:

  1. Check Weaknesses before the fightOpen the enemy info to see which Types it’s weak to, then slot in characters of those Types. The harder the boss, the more this step matters.
  2. Open with TechniquesBesides buffing your team, some Techniques can be used to attack, so you can chip away at enemy Toughness and start the fight with an advantage. Techniques only cost Technique Points, no items or materials.
  3. Basic ATK with the right TypeA Basic ATK costs no Skill Points and gives you 1 Skill Point. When you’re short on Skill Points, let the characters who match the Weakness use Basic ATK. It still chips away at Toughness.
  4. Lead with multi-hit skillsSkills that hit many times often deal better Toughness damage. When you need a quick break, use those first.
  5. Time your Ultimate around the breakAn Ultimate can be used at any time once Energy is full. In a free-to-play Super Break team, time the Trailblazer (Harmony) Ultimate so the team can already deal Super Break DMG when the enemy breaks. That window is the most valuable part of the fight, so don’t waste it.

Sample Break Teams

Here are three common Break teams, from a free-to-play setup to teams built around Firefly and Boothill. Teams can shift as new characters come out, so check the teams page for the latest.

TeamMembersHow it plays
F2P Super BreakMarch 7th (The Hunt), Trailblazer (Harmony), Asta, LynxTrailblazer (Harmony) uses the Ultimate so the whole team can deal Super Break DMG. Asta buffs the team and deals heavy Toughness damage, which pushes Super Break numbers up.
Firefly Super BreakFirefly, Fugue, The Dahlia, LingshaFirefly is the main damage dealer, and she should have Fugue or Trailblazer (Harmony) next to her so the team can deal massive Super Break DMG. The Dahlia fits well because the zone from her Skill lets the team deal Super Break DMG even to enemies that aren’t Weakness Broken yet.
Boothill single targetBoothill, Sunday, Fugue, GallagherSunday (or Bronya) gives Boothill extra turns so he can break the enemy as early as possible. Once the enemy is broken, his Enhanced Basic ATK deals huge Break DMG to one target.

On the site’s tier list for version 4.6, Firefly is SS in Memory of Chaos, Pure Fiction and Apocalyptic Shadow (S+ on the Overall list). The Dahlia and Lingsha are also SS in all three modes, Fugue is SS in Memory of Chaos and Pure Fiction, Boothill is S+ in Memory of Chaos, and Trailblazer (Harmony) is S+ in all three. In short, Break teams still have a real place in today’s endgame.

No Firefly yet?The F2P team is plenty to learn how Super Break works. Trailblazer (Harmony) is the piece that turns on Super Break for the whole team and still ranks S+ in all three endgame modes, so the time you put into building this Trailblazer won’t go to waste.

When a Super Break Team Is the Right Call

Break teams are strong, but they don’t suit every fight. Their strengths and weak spots are pretty clear, so weigh both before you commit:

Bring it when

Good conditions

The enemy is weak to your breaker’s Type. Your team already has someone who enables Super Break, like Trailblazer (Harmony) or Fugue. You don’t feel like hunting Relics with good CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG, since a Break team’s damage comes from Break Effect, not CRIT.

Swap teams when

Bad conditions

The boss has no Weakness your team can hit. The enemy can disable its own Weaknesses, which makes breaking Toughness a struggle. Remember that a Break team deals much less damage to an enemy that isn’t broken, so fights where breaking is hard get rough.

Four Questions to Ask Before You Build the Team

  • Is the enemy weak to your breaker’s Type?
  • Does your team have someone who enables Super Break, or a character who deals Break DMG to broken enemies (Firefly, Boothill)?
  • Does the enemy keep its Weaknesses for the whole fight? If it can disable them, think about another team, such as a CRIT team.
  • Does your breaker have multi-hit skills that deal good Toughness damage?

If you can answer yes to all four, bring the Break team with confidence. If you get stuck on the first or third question, save the Break team for another fight and bring a better fit, such as a CRIT team. The endgame modes guide covers each mode in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Break Effect make you break Toughness faster?

No. Break Effect only boosts Break DMG, the DoT caused by a break, Super Break DMG, and how strongly the enemy is slowed and delayed. How fast you break Toughness depends on the character’s skills, and skills with many hits often break more easily.

What is the difference between Super Break and Break DMG?

Break DMG goes off when an enemy’s Toughness hits 0. Super Break comes after that: when your team has a Super Break effect, attacks on an already broken enemy deal extra Super Break DMG, based on your Break Effect and the Toughness damage of that attack.

Do Break characters need CRIT Rate?

No. Their damage comes from Break Effect rather than CRIT, so you don’t have to balance CRIT Rate against CRIT DMG. That’s one reason Break teams are easier to gear.

Does Break Effect increase a character’s DoT?

Only the DoT that comes from Weakness Break, like Bleed from Physical or Burn from Fire. DoT from a character’s own kit doesn’t scale with this stat.

Can I play Super Break without Firefly or Boothill?

Yes. March 7th (The Hunt), Trailblazer (Harmony), Asta and Lynx make a well-known free-to-play Super Break team. The Trailblazer (Harmony) Ultimate lets the whole team deal Super Break DMG, and Asta buffs the team while dealing a lot of Toughness damage.

What if the enemy has no matching Weakness or can disable its Weaknesses?

A Break team will struggle, because without breaking Toughness its damage drops sharply. Switch to a CRIT team or another team that fits better. The teams page and the per-mode tier list have ideas.
